2nd Period · Lesson 7 of 12 · Rink Pass
The power play
When a goal lets a player out of the box, and when it does not.
This lesson comes with the Rink Pass: $1.95 a month or $19.50 a year. Free during preview: it is open to you now and nothing is charged. What the Pass includes
-
1/4 Five on four. Home moves the puck around the zone looking for a shot.
-
2/4 Home scores.
-
3/4 The goal ends one minor penalty, the one with the least time left, so the visiting player comes out of the box.
-
4/4 Two visitors in the box at once means five on three. A third penalty would not leave them with two: its time waits until one of the first two runs out.
When a team is short because of minor penalties and the other team scores, one minor ends: the one with the least time left. For a double minor (four minutes for one player), a goal wipes out what is left of the first two minutes and the second two start.
Majors do not end on a goal. They are served for the full five minutes.
A team can never have fewer than four players on the ice counting the goalie, so never fewer than three skaters. If a third player is penalized while two teammates are in the box, the third penalty's time starts only when one of the first two ends. Players come out in the order their penalties end.
When each team takes the same number of minors at the same stoppage, both teams may replace those players right away, so nobody plays short. The penalized players still sit their time and come out at the first stoppage after it runs out. Goals from a penalty shot do not end a penalty.
