Overtime · Lesson 12 of 12 · Rink Pass
Overtime and ties
What the high-school book says, and why you should check the state's rules.
This lesson comes with the Rink Pass: $1.95 a month or $19.50 a year. Free during preview: it is open to you now and nothing is charged. What the Pass includes
-
1/3 Tied after three periods. If overtime is played, there is a short break (about three minutes) with the teams staying by their benches.
-
2/3 The teams change ends, just like between periods.
-
3/3 Sudden victory: up to eight minutes, and the first goal wins. No goal, and under the book the game is a tie.
The NFHS book's overtime: a short intermission with the teams staying in their bench areas, the teams change ends, and up to eight minutes of sudden-victory play. If nobody scores, the game is a tie.
State associations can adopt their own overtime policies, and tournaments often have their own. In Ohio that is the OHSAA's call, so check the state's current adoptions or the game program.
College and pro hockey on TV use different overtime formats, such as three skaters a side or shootouts. Don't expect those at a high-school game unless the state has adopted something like them.
